Contact: SRC
Due to increased call volume the SRC networking line will be
implementing an interim solution to better manage the workload. Calls
will be automatically forwarded to voice mail and processed as quickly
as possible. For accurate and thorough answers leave detailed messages.
Networking and Client/Server
Does DART 9.0 have Token Ring support for SNA or NetWare?
Token Ring support is available with HP SNAplus Release 2.0 by obtaining
a patch. Refer to the March 1 DataComm Newsletter for instructions on
how to obtain this software. NetWare/9000 Version 3.11 is part of the
DART 9.0 release, but this version does not support Token Ring.
What is the best source for new DTC configuration information?
The best source is the DTC Racking and Cabling Guide, P/N 5961-0373,
available from Support Materials Organization at 800-227-8164.
"HP STREAMS/UX for HP's UNIX Servers and Workstations" Correction
The following is a correction for the March 1 article. HP NetWare and
OSI Transport Services (OTS) products and the entire SNAplus product
family require STREAMS. The HP-UX 8.X version of these products included
a bundled and limited implementation of STREAMS. For HP-UX 9.X,
STREAMS/UX is a separate product: P/N J2237A for HP 9000 Series 800,
P/N J2232A for HP Apollo 9000 Series 700, and P/N J2231A for HP 9000
Series 300/HP Apollo 9000 Series 400. HP STREAMS/UX is compatible with
UNIX(R) System V Release 4 and supports products from both HP and
external vendors. Only one copy of HP STREAMS/UX is required per system.
Customers that purchased support for an HP STREAMS-based networking
product on HP-UX 8.X will receive STREAMS as part of the 9.X update to
that networking product. For more information access the Networking
Hotline subject STREAMS.
HP 9000 Series 800 and HP 1000
What is the new ordering structure for HP OpenSpool and OmniBack?
Refer to "HP OmniBack, OmniBack/ Turbo, and OpenSpool User-Based
Licensing" in the December 1, 1992, Computer News. Unlimited-user
license option UAT has been deleted, and 512-user option UCQ has been
added. For more than 512 users order option UCQ in conjunction with
another license option to bring the total to the required number.
900 Series HP 3000 and Terminals
Can HP LaserJet III and 4 printers be configured on HP 3000?
To use an HP LaserJet III printer with HP 3000 you must use a status
checking card, P/N 26013A. To run an HP LaserJet IIIsi printer on HP
3000, use status checking card P/N C2059H. The HP LaserJet 4 printer
runs on MPE/iX 4.0. Serial connection support solutions are available
from external vendors: Status3000 ESI-2626A from Extended Systems, 800-
235-7576; JetCard/MIO-3000 from Excellink, 408-295-9000. For network
support on HP LaserJet 4 printers use an HP JetDirect card for
Ethernet/802.3 networks, P/N J2741A or J2742A, with NBSPOOL from QUEST,
714-720-1434.
Can mirrored disks be used with SCSI?
Yes, but there are some constraints. For example you can mirror the two
internal disks, but this is not recommended or supported as the
nonsystem internal disks are on the same SCSI card. Mirrored disks
should be on different cards. You can mirror fiber-link disks and SCSI
disks on the same system, but the disks must be mirrored within their
own family (FL to FL, SCSI to SCSI). The 4.0 version of the operating
system is required. Order HP Mirrored Disk/XL software, P/N 30349A.
Refer to the data sheet, P/N 5952-0302.

CWR Channel Merges with Two-Tier Channel
CWR Channel Merges with Two-Tier Channel
For the U.S. Only
Contact: Tony Hinojosa, 408 or Telnet 447-0794
Effective March 1 channel programs for U.S. certified workstation
resellers (CWRs) were incorporated into Computer Systems Organization's
(CSO) two-tier distribution channels, and the CWR terminology was
retired. CWR franchisers sign on as CSO distributors. Independent CWRs
and CWR franchisees become CSO distributor-authorized resellers (DARs)
and operate in one of several newly created DAR value-add categories.
With this change from having HP Channel Partners operating in the CWR
channel receive a mix of programs and infrastructure provided by CSO and
Computer Products Organization (CPO), CSO can provide a consistent set
of programs for its two-tier resellers.
The two former CWR franchisers, Intelligent Electronics (I.E.) and
Microage, maintain their ability to purchase CSO products by signing CSO
two-tier distributor agreements. The new agreements are separate from
current CPO franchiser dealer agreements. Former I.E. and Microage CWR
franchisees can become certified as HP DARs by completing a DAR Quick
Approval Form and asking their local HP account reps to submit the form
and a copy of the DAR Nomination Cover Sheet to the HP Microage or I.E.
headquarters sales team. After approval by Microage or I.E. the HP
headquarters rep will submit the paperwork directly to the Americas
Value-Added Channels Marketing Center (VMC).
Former independent CWRs can establish DAR relationships with HP
distributors by following the same procedure. When filling out the Quick
Approval Form the DAR must indicate whether it is a software developer,
solution implementer, or OEM DAR.
Once DARs are certified their company information will be automatically
entered into the HP Channel Partner VALID database, and they will begin
to receive applicable VMC services. The Quick Approval Form and
Nomination Cover Sheet contain the information needed to enter certified
DARs into VALID; DARs no longer need to fill out separate HP data kits.

HP Channel Partners Can Direct Order HP Literature
HP Channel Partners Can Direct Order HP Literature
For the Americas Only
Contact: Diane Podkomorski, 408 or Telnet 447-4204
Effective April 1 HP Channel Partners can direct order selected Computer
Systems Organization (CSO) HP 3000, HP 9000, and X station sales
materials from COMAC, Inc., instead of from HP sales reps. Companies
listed in the Americas Channel Partner VALID database are eligible to
place orders with COMAC. A fee will be charged for ordered items to
offset HP literature production and order processing costs. Channel
Partners can pay by VISA or MasterCard or can be invoiced. Eligible
Channel Partners can request reimbursement for COMAC charges using
IMpact co-op funds.
The literature stocked at COMAC has been selected to meet Channel
Partner sales needs. Current inventory includes data sheets, photo
cards, configuration and price guides, and brochures. Channel Partners
should continue to order items not currently stocked at COMAC through
regular HP sources.
U.S. and Canadian Channel Partners can place orders with COMAC by
calling 800-862-0633. Latin American Channel Partners can fax orders to
408-945-1135. Latin American orders must be paid by credit card. There
is also a $7 per order fee to cover the document preparation costs
required for Latin American shipments.
A special April mailing will introduce the new service to Channel
Partner contacts listed in the VALID database. The mailing will contain
ordering instructions and a list of materials stocked at COMAC. Updated
COMAC inventory lists will be distributed in ChanneLink, HP's monthly
sales tools package for Channel Partners. COMAC inventory lists are also
available online to Channel Partners that have access to HP News Network
(HPNN) or can be requested directly from COMAC when orders are placed.

later) and 386 (Version 3.11) support
o Support for eight file servers and 32 queues
o Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 support with 10Base-T/10Base2 transceivers on
board
o 4/16 Mb/s Token Ring/IEEE 802.5
o HP Bi-Tronics (bidirectional parallel) support
o Power supply with AC pass-through capability for most HP peripherals
o Simple network management protocol (SNMP) support via onboard agent
and management information base (MIB)
o HP JetAdmin network administrator and HP JetPrint Novell client
Microsoft(R) Windows-based utilities-offer installation ease, printer
control, and remote administration capability
o Onboard single in-line memory module (SIMM) socket-allows customers
to upgrade as their network operating system evolves
Product Positioning
The new products expand the HP JetDirect interface product line to the
low end and provide location flexibility, high performance, and network
management for HP parallel/Centronics-based printers and plotters.
Tips and Traps
The HP JetDirect EX power supply provides AC power pass-through
capability for most HP peripherals. Some HP peripherals that have
permanently attached power cords or their own external power supplies
require a standard IEC 320 power cord, P/N 8120-1378 in the U.S. and
Canada, which must be purchased separately.
A standard 25- to 36-pin parallel/Centronics printer cable must be
purchased separately. Various lengths are available from HP. Refer to
the HP JetDirect selection guide, P/N 5091-6263E.
For More Information
For a listing of HP JetDirect network interfaces refer to the HP
JetDirect selection guide, which is available via fax from HP FIRST ID

HP JetDirect Cards Support Multiple Network Protocols
HP JetDirect Cards Support Multiple Network Protocols
Contact: Mike Verdugo, 916 or Telnet 785-4911
o Product Name and P/N: HP JetDirect cards for Ethernet and Token
Ring, see text for P/Ns
o Description: multiple-protocol network adapter cards that allow HP
network-ready printers and plotters to attach directly to most PC, Apple
Macintosh, and UNIX system-based networks
o Target Market: small-to-large Ethernet or Token Ring networks that
require a flexible, high-performance means to connect HP network-ready
printers anywhere on a LAN across multiple network platforms
On April 5 HP will announce three new HP JetDirect cards to add to its
line of network interfaces for HP printers and plotters: two for
Ethernet/802.3 networks-one with a 10Base-T (twisted-pair) port and one
with a 10Base-T and a 10Base2 (thin coax) port-and one for Token Ring
networks. All three cards are designed for use in HP printers equipped
with modular I/O (MIO) accessory slots. HP will also introduce two
software kits to be purchased along with HP JetDirect cards that will be
installed in supported UNIX system Ethernet environments.
Features and Benefits
o Direct network connection- allows HP printers and plotters to be
located anywhere on the network
o High-performance network connection-provides maximum data throughput
to support full engine speed
o Onboard SIMM socket-makes products customer upgradable
o Support for network protocols for Ethernet/IEEE 802.3: SPX/IPX,
DLC/LLC, TCP/IP, EtherTalk
o Support for network operating systems for Ethernet/IEEE 802.3:
Novell NetWare; Microsoft Lan Manager, Windows for Workgroups, and
Windows NT; IBM LAN Server; HP-UX; SunOS; Solaris; SCO UNIX; Apple
EtherTalk
o Support for network protocols for Token Ring/IEEE 802.5: SPX/IPX,
DLC/LLC
o Support for network operating systems for Token Ring/IEEE 802.5:
Novell NetWare; Microsoft Lan Manager, Windows for Workgroups, and
Windows NT; IBM LAN Server
o Simple network management protocol (SNMP) support
o Software utilities for Novell NetWare networks-HP JetAdmin, which
allows network administrators to remotely configure, monitor, and manage
all printers connected with an HP JetDirect interface; HP JetPrint,
which offers end users simple network printer selection, automatic
installation of Windows drivers, and remote printer and job status
When installed in the accessory slot of an HP LaserJet 4Si or 4Si MX
printer, the new HP JetDirect cards automatically switch among supported
network protocols and network operating systems, so a single printer can
receive print jobs from multiple networks running different network
operating systems. The new cards are also supported with HP LaserJet 4
and IIISi printers, PaintJet XL300 printers, and DesignJet 600 and 650C
plotters. When the cards are installed in any of these peripherals, a
single selectable network protocol/network operating system is
supported.
Product Positioning
The new HP JetDirect cards are the network connection to prefer for HP
network-ready printers and plotters that are equipped with MIO accessory
slots. The cards are complemented by the HP JetDirect EX external
network interfaces, which provide entry-level network printing solutions
for HP printers and plotters without MIO slots, such as the HP LaserJet
IIIP printer (see preceding article).
Competitive Positioning
HP JetDirect cards are currently unmatched in their breadth of network
protocol and network operating system support, ease of installation and
use, remote status capabilities, high-performance throughput, and
reliability.
For More Information
For a listing of HP JetDirect network interfaces and their supported
configurations, refer to the HP JetDirect selection guide, P/N 5091-

New HP JetDirect Upgrades
Contact: Joni Jensen, 916 or Telnet 785-4997
The HP JetDirect product offering has been simplified and enhanced. To
continue to protect existing customer investments in HP JetDirect
products, upgrade kits provide enhancements to the installed base. The
following upgrade products will be available on the Corporate Price
List. The upgrade products will be purchase-agreement discountable.
HP JetDirect upgrade product, available May 1, will provide new printer
and configuration management utilities, support for Microsoft Windows
for Workgroups and Windows NT, NetWare 4.0, and multiple-protocol

HP Output Stacker and Paper Feeder Provide New HP LaserJet
4Si/Si MX Printer Paper-Handling Solutions
HP Output Stacker and Paper Feeder Provide New HP LaserJet 4Si/Si
MX Printer Paper-Handling Solutions
Contact: Ameeta Ahuja, 408 or Telnet 746-5437
o Product Name and P/N: HP Output Stacker, P/N C2801A; HP Paper
Feeder, P/N C2921A
o Description: HP Output Stacker is a 2,000-sheet bin that is
integrated into a printer stand. HP Paper Feeder is a 1,500-sheet
capacity feeder.
o Target Market: network printer customers that require high-
volume (documents of 200 pages or more) or unattended printing
Features and Benefits
HP Stacker is designed to match the footprint of the feeder and the
printer. When used with HP Paper Feeder it facilitates unattended
printing and increases printer I/O capabilities.
For customers that do not require unattended printing a solution is HP
Paper Feeder combined with HP LaserJet Printer Cabinet. This solution
enhances high-volume printing by reducing paper tray refilling by
approximately 50 percent and provides space for supply storage and a
work surface.
Competitive Positioning
HP is the only major printer company currently offering this solution
for network printers.
Tips and Traps
Incremental profits can be added to HP LaserJet Si/Si MX printer sales
by including paper-handling solutions. Follow-up sales opportunities are
also available because HP Output Stacker is compatible with the HP
LaserJet IIISi printer with the addition of installation kit P/N RG5-
0067-000CN.
HP Output Stacker must be installed by an authorized HP service dealer
or customer engineer. Stacker price does not include installation. HP
Output Stacker installation time for HP LaserJet 4Si/Si MX printers is
approximately 1 hour; for HP LaserJet IIISi printers, 11/2 hours.
For More Information
For technical and marketing information refer to the Paper-Handling
Solutions sales guide, P/N 5091-6160, and data sheet, P/N 5091-6159E, in
the HP LaserJet 4Si/Si MX printer materials. Also reference the ads in

New Model 425e to 715/50 Upgrade
New Model 425e to 715/50 Upgrade
Contact: SRC Fort Collins, Europe, Asia Pacific
In response to your requests there is a new HP Apollo 9000 Series 400 to
Series 700 upgrade-Model 425e to Model 715/50. This product addition
creates an upgrade to PA-7100 for the entire Series 400 family.
The new upgrade gives Model 425e customers a 5.8x performance boost, an
EISA expansion slot, and improved audio for about half the price of a
new Model 715/50. The upgrade is a box swap in which the system serial
number changes and customers keep monitor, internal peripherals, and
memory. Customers get a new case, power supply, processor board, HP-UX
9.01 two-user license, and HP installation. Model 425e Domain customers
must buy a localization kit to get the appropriate keyboard and mouse.
Model 425e HP-UX customers should purchase the localization kit with
option 005 to get only HP-UX 9.01 documentation.

HP 700/RX Prices Reduced
HP 700/RX Prices Reduced
Contact: Mukund Ghangurde, 519 or Telnet 883-3041; SRC
Effective April 1 prices of specific HP 700/RX models were reduced by up
to $1,000. The reductions give HP industry-leading price/performance in
key categories of the X-terminal market. HP 17- and 19-inch color X
stations are priced lower than competitive products that offer
comparable performance. For example Model 19Ca offers greater system
performance than Network Computing Devices 19c for $1,000 less.
The price reductions broaden the appeal of HP X stations to a larger
customer base in commercial and technical markets. The reductions also
allow HP Channel Partners to compete more effectively with other X-
terminal vendors' sales forces.

Positioning C++ SoftBench with HP Distributed Smalltalk
Positioning C++ SoftBench with HP Distributed Smalltalk
Contact: Bob Cannon, 303 or Telnet 229-4859; Ian Fuller, 408 or Telnet
447-4722; local SF 37 sales reps
HP is not distributing a Smalltalk development environment. HP is
offering a set of Smalltalk class libraries that allows VisualWorks from
ParcPlace Systems to be used in prototyping systems using distributed
objects. The initial HP Distributed Smalltalk release in April is a
limited distribution aimed at current VisualWorks users. VisualWorks is
required for the use of HP Distributed Smalltalk. The future release of
a broader-based version is dependent upon the success of this release.
C++ versus Smalltalk
For C++ SoftBench and HP Distributed Smalltalk positioning, both
languages must be positioned as to their relative merits in object-
oriented development. C++ is a solution for performance-oriented,
mission-critical applications, especially server applications. Smalltalk
is a solution for prototyping as in user interface-oriented client
applications. Customers that are beginning object-oriented work from a C
background may find migration to C++ easier. Customers that are moving
from COBOL or 4GLs may find a move to Smalltalk easier.
HP Distributed Objects Program Implications
Both C++ and Smalltalk will support object-oriented development of
distributed applications. Objects developed with either language will
interoperate via the OMG standards. HP Distributed Smalltalk is intended
to give some customers early access to OMG CORBA technology. HP intends
C++ SoftBench to be the development environment of choice for future C++
implementations of OMG CORBA.

To demonstrate HP's ability to provide empowered manufacturing solutions
based on client/server architecture and graphical user interface, the
second Empowered Manufacturing seminar will be held in Minnesota and New
Jersey in April. Empowered Manufacturing II is designed as a follow-up
to the first seminar, which was held in March. The first seminar
addressed decision makers, and this seminar will address technical
recommenders. The seminars are targeted at business, manufacturing, and
operations process engineers, and MIS managers.
Seminar topics include how to successfully migrate to and implement a
client/server architecture with legacy systems, integrate data and
legacy applications, expand capabilities, and inform your organization
by integrating networks. The seminar agenda includes key note speakers
from Gartner Group. John Borelli, the New Jersey key note speaker, will
discuss how the highly integrated manufacturing enterprise goes beyond
the traditional approach to bring the manufacturing enterprise into
balance. Peter Schay, the Minnesota key note speaker, will present a
review of trends, applications, architectures, technologies, and user
strategies for client/server solutions. A process industry product fair
will feature SAP, Datalogix, HP RTAP, Mechanical Design Division, Rust
International Systems Integrator, ICC, BWI, Allen-Bradley, Hilco, and
BBN.
